Setting example for greener school

By Brendan Rees

Students of Tooradin Primary School got into the spirit of Clean Up Australia last Friday, 2 March.
The children devoted time to cleaning up rubbish around the school yards as part of the annual effort to keep Australia clean.
The school’s Environment Coordinator Heidi Carroll said the school had adopted a nude food approach which educates children about how their actions can impact the environment and their health.
She says students are encouraged to choose reusable containers for their lunches and snacks.
“In the case that students do bring rubbish, they are well practiced in sorting it into the four classroom bins – one for paper, one for recyclable containers, one for food scraps that go to the hens and finally landfill.”
“Each year we commit to this worthy project as it is a fun and engaging way to teach young Australians about the responsible disposal of rubbish, taking ownership of their school and be a caretaker of the environment,” Ms Carroll said.
More than 2100 school clean-up sites were registered for Clean Up Australia Day this year.
