Cops probe suspicious fires

By Brendan Rees

Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash camera footage following a series of suspicious fires on the side of Clyde Road in Berwick on Saturday 16 December.
Detective Senior Constable Peter Warden said between 1pm and 1.20pm, three separate fires were set ablaze on the side of the road in what is believed to be arson.
He said two fires were lit under trees on the west of Clyde Road, about 100 metres south of Centre Road and one on the east side of the road – just north of Chirnside track
“They’ve lit up leaves, bark and piled it up and set them on fire. All three fires are about a metre by a metre, and it’s actually started up the trunk of the trees.”
Detective Sen Const Warden said he believed the fires were deliberately lit, adding “We’ve got no description or anything from anyone at this point.”
He said CFA extinguished the fires within a few minutes and nothing was found at the scene.
“I’m tipping, it must’ve been a cigarette lighter or similar.”
“We’ve got no description or anything from anyone at this point.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Senior Constable Peter Warden at Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3111.
