AFL Cats destroy trainer’s big day

SAINTS fan and Cranbourne trainer Jean Purcell was horrified when she was told all top weights at the Geelong meeting last Friday had to wear Cats colours.

To make matters worse, Purcell was told Back To Destroy would be competing in the Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett Handicap.
“We are died in the wool St Kilda supporters and the main reason we ran at Geelong and not Mornington on Saturday was because one of the part owners, Leon Wilson, wanted to go to the grand final,” Purcell said.
The former winner of the Lady of Racing Award admitted it was a humorous situation.
Despite having to wear blue and white, Purcell remained optimistic the Back To Destroy and her beloved Saints would pull through on Grand Final Day.
“With a name like Back to Destroy he is an omen bet too after Geelong made the grand final last year, but I hope they are coming back to be destroyed, not destroy us,” she said before the race.
“He can win on Friday with their colours on, but I damn well hope their colours do not win on Saturday.”
Unfortunately for Purcell, Back To Destroy was unplaced in the Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett Handicap, and the St Kilda Saints were defeated in one of the best grand final contests in years.
