CHILDREN have been put to the challenge to build the best mulch mini-garden these school holidays at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne.
Using colourful mulches, children have the opportunity to participate in the challenge on 10 July.
Children will also be able to make gumnut characters these school holidays.
Education co-ordinator at the gardens, Mick Robertson, said children would learn how to save water in the garden during the challenge and find out how plants could survive in tough environments.
“The mini-mulch garden challenge is a great way of introducing children to mulches, showing how much fun it can be and why it is so essential to keeping weeds at bay and plants moist,” Mr Robertson said.
The challenge will be held on 10 July from 10.30am to 12.15pm.
This winter school holidays, children and parents also have the opportunity to explore the world of Australian native seed pods during the Build A Hortasaurus workshops, and use coloured sand to create their own rock pool bunyip in the Australian Garden.
Bookings are essential. For details call 5990 2245.
