STUDENTS at Lyndhurst Secondary College are hoping to overcome obstacles and reach their dreams with the encouragement of a former AFL favourite.
Glenn Manton, ex-Carlton Blues footballer spoke to Year 11 students last week about fulfilling their potential and working through problems, and spoke to other students who found school life difficult.
“He spoke about helping young people find their direction and the confidence to work through any barriers in their educations,” assistant principal at Lyndhurst Secondary College Helen Brown said.
“We believe it’s an innovative pilot and we see it as another resource in our school to help the students meet their welfare needs and help get them really focused.”
Mr Manton, co-founder of the Whitelion Foundation, works with disadvantaged youth across the world. This was his first visit to the school and will be returning one day a week for six weeks. Students have email access to continue their contact with him.
“We’re pretty excited about it. He is a very engaging speaker – he delivers his message in a way that really hooks us in,” Ms Brown said. “We heard some of the kids saying ‘that’s the best thing I’ve even done’.”
