THE transition from primary to secondary school is made easier for Year 7 students at St Peter’s College in Cranbourne.
The Year 11 students team up with the Year 7s and work through a series of student-led workshops to help the new students develop skills in resilience, decision making, assertiveness and problem solving.
The peer support program aims to foster the physical, mental and social well-being of Year 7 students as they begin secondary school.
Peer support co-ordinator Rivonia Pereira said the program was a vital part of the culture of the college.
“It develops the self-esteem of our Year 7s and gives our Year 11s the opportunity to shine as leaders. The results are long-term and far-reaching. Mostly, it is a valuable and positive experience for all the staff and students involved.”
