Countdown to mind event

TWO groups of students at Hampton Park Primary School have put their minds before matter to take out awards in a Tournaments of the Mind event.
In a tournament against neighbouring school Kilberry Valley Primary School, the two student teams put their mathematical engineering skills to the test.
Enrichment coordinator at the school Shilpa Sanghani said the students had to prepare a countdown meter and associate it with an event, preparing and presenting it within 10 minutes.
She said one of the teams counted down to the 2010 Commonwealth Games and presented it along with a song and dance.
They also performed sports such as badminton and gymnastics to build atmosphere for the Games.
Mrs Sanghani said the meter was very impressive, built from cardboard and marble, and won them awards for Outstanding Dramatic Performance and Accurate Countdown Meter.
The school’s second team built a countdown clock for a rocket launching.
“The group presented the complete event in a very hilarious way and successfully met the same criteria as the other team,” Mrs Sanghani said.
They won an award for Concept With Potential.
Mrs Sanghani said the students enjoyed participating and preparing for the event and apart from building skills in their academic subjects such as mathematics and science, they also learnt about working in a team and using technology and presentation tools.
