Dogwise lesson

By Sarah Schwager
GRADE prep students at Cranbourne West Primary School were given the chance to learn how to be safe with dogs last week.
Cranbourne West Primary School integration assistant Keryn Heritage said the 45minute session on Friday aimed to educate the students on how to care for their dog and what to do if they met a strange dog.
Ms Heritage said the students learnt what was good for dogs and what was not and how to react if they were approached by a dog they did not know.
Ms Heritage said the annual program was once again successful.
“It’s a wonderful program. They’ve been coming out here for at least four years that I’ve been here,” she said.
The program is run by two pet educators from Responsible Pet Ownership.
Ms Heritage said the children were given the chance to meet and pat Lola, the boxer taken on the program.
She said the children responded well to meeting Lola.
She said they were also given lots of question and answer time, which they loved.
“It’s a wonderful program. It’s just great for the prep children,” she said.
“It gives them hands on practice meeting a strange dog.”
