TOORADIN Primary School students stormed through the school’s latest challenge when they entered a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) competition.
The competition required a team of up to eight riders and eight pit crew members to design, build and race a vehicle powered solely by pedal power.
The team of grade five and six children raced the six-hour race, pedalling as many times as they could around the 800-metre course.
They came eighth in the primary school section, managing 146 laps in the six hours.
The students built their machine, called The Flaming Mozzie, with help from Wonthaggi Secondary College’s Alan Harris and Ewan Cole.
It had to pass rigorous testing and scrutineering to be accepted into the race.
The school is now focused on its next event in November, which will be held at Maryborough.
The team is already in training, with distance running and bike riding each week.
