CRANBOURNE Community House has babies’ jumpers flooding its halls thanks to donations from the community.
Knitters have put together an amazing 400 jumpers for South African babies born with AIDS after the centre received wool from people around Cranbourne and beyond.
Cranbourne Community House manager Margaret O’Callaghan said the response was outstanding.
“It is heart-warming how the people of Cranbourne have made this a huge project,” she said.
She thanked everyone for their time, generosity and goodwill.
But Ms O’Callaghan said they now had so many jumpers, they could not afford to send them overseas.
“The cost of sending the jumpers was not thought about until the jumpers came flooding in from the knitters,” she said.
“I thought there would be a dozen at most.”
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford has offered to post the first 20 kilograms.
Ms O’Callaghan said they would need the assistance of the business community to cover the cost of sending the remaining jumpers.
The wool drive started after a committee member starting knitting jumpers for South African babies and the community house decided to advertise for wool donations.
Ms O’Callaghan said the wool started arriving in black plastic bags and was distributed to the knitters in nursing homes, retirement villages, individuals, sporting clubs and service organisations.
The jumpers will be sent to the Rotary Ann Club in South Africa which will then distribute them.
