Cannons back to their best in top division

Casey Cannons finished the home-and-away season in first place on the Men’s Vic League (MVL2) ladder after thumping St Bede’s 10-0.

Having seven goal scorers would’ve been the most pleasing thing for the Cannons, with almost every player on the field capable of impacting the scoreboard.

When the two teams met earlier in the season, it was a slightly more competitive game, with Casey Hockey Club winning 6-1.

Tristan Chaffey (three goals) and Elliot Stephens (two goals) were brilliant in the victory as the team’s multiple goal scorers.

Other players who found the back of the net included Harry Coster, Bopanna Prince Achandira, Matthew Light, David Noney and captain Craig Moore.

The MVL2 Reserves also had a strong win over St Bede’s as Harry Coster doubled up and scored once again, leading the Cannons to a 4-0 victory.

Nur Ilham Amin Bin Iszehar, Zach Coster and Adam Shilliday each found the back of the net in a strong team performance, which saw Casey finish third on the ladder.

The Men’s Pennant D South East team had a tough 6-0 loss against MCC as they were completely outclassed by one of the hot premiership favourites.

It was the conclusion of a tough season for the side, finishing on the bottom of the ladder with just two wins, but also five draws.

In the Men’s Metro 2 South (MMS) competition, Casey Cannons finished its season with a draw, which was a win in the context of the season.

Sitting second-bottom on the ladder, it was always going to be a task for the Jeff Reidy-led team to match it with Mornington Peninsula, but the Cannons were up to it.

They finished the game 0-0, with the defence holding firm to keep Mornington’s attacking players at bay and split the points.

In the women’s matches, the Cannons set the tone in the Women’s Vic League (WVL1) match against PEGS for a big win, 5-1.

It was the 14th time this season that Casey’s top women’s side has tasted victory as they shift their focus to a big finals series, sitting third on the ladder.

Tessa Martin was the star of the show with two goals, showcasing her attacking flair to put her team in the box seat for a win.

Other scorers were Charlotte Smith, Jessica Rowland and Samantha Dobrich.

The WVL2 Reserves match finished in a draw with the scoreboard reading 2-2 after a competitive match – finishing the regular season in fourth position.

Rebecca Gregory put the Cannons on her back and performed in a big way, converting on two opportunities in the forward half to score both goals for the team.

Casey hosted Camberwell in the Pennant E South East match, winning a one-goal thriller to retain its spot in second on the ladder.

It was a hard-fought contest and neither side was prepared to give an inch, before Jane Gipp produced a breakthrough for the Cannons with the only goal of the match.

Casey’s season finished with a 6-0 loss in the Women’s Metro 1 South (WMS) competition, as it was completely outplayed against OHA.

The match-up was almost a case of bottom versus top and it was always going to be a huge challenge for the Cannons.

There was no lack of effort, but they simply weren’t strong enough to compete with the best team in the competition.

The junior leading scorers for the season were also announced, with Will Justice (nine goals), Chantelle Calado (15 goals) and Charlotte Smith (12 goals) having great seasons in the Under-16s.

Ellie Gallus (16 goals) was the pick of the Under-14s players, while Aashwath Bhatt (20 goals), Charlotte Wheeler (11 goals) and Emily Ferguson (10 goals) excelled in the Under-12s.
