Metropolitan Pennant Bowls began on Friday 18 October, when our Division 1 team travelled to the Narre Warren Bowls Club to take on the newly promoted Narre Warren in Division 1 under lights and under their dome.
The game started at 7:00 pm and was a truly great game with absolutely nothing between the teams and some great bowls were played.
The standard of the game was exactly what you’d expect from teams of this quality.
Played in very good spirit, but hard, the teams went at it hammer and tongs.
After four hours and 45 minutes, the game finally reached conclusion at 11:43 pm with Cranbourne 1 coming out on top by a mere 10 shots, winning by three rinks to one.
Result: Cranbourne 1 (83) defeated Narre Warren 1 (73). + 10 shots and 16 points.
Congratulations to everyone who played and to the members and friends that travelled to Narre Warren to support their teams.
Saturday saw Cranbourne 2 playing at home against Hampton Park 1 and again the game was very close.
Cranbourne 2 took the points, winning two rinks, drawing one and losing one to defeat Hampton Park by 11 shots and gain 15 points.
Cranbourne 3 travelled down the road to take on our neighbours in Edithvale.
Unfortunately, the team struggled a bit and were defeated by Edithvale three rinks to one.
Our one shining light of the day was the team skipped by Tony Collins, with Stuart Walters, Lois Brock and Kristi Hickson winning (24-17).
We at least gained two points out of the match.
Playing at home, Cranbourne 4 took on Glen Waverley 3 on the synthetic grass and again this game had everything and was close all day.
Following the lunch break, the Glen Waverley team started coming back and with only three ends left to play, Glen Waverley had moved to an eight shot lead.
The Cranbourne team lead by skip Scott DePiazza with Derek Maguire, Monica Peers and Barry Graham finished their 21st end with a great score of five shots.
This left the team skipped by Roger Roscoe with Ron Fenton, Dennis Tomlin and Liz Hughes the job of trying to finish off the game.
On the penultimate end, Rogers’ team dropped three shots, which made the score 84-81 in Glen Waverley’s favour.
So it all came down to the last end and last bowl which belonged to Cranbourne skipper, Roger Roscoe.
With a precision bowl, Roscoe picked up the jack and trailed it back, picking up four shots and giving Cranbourne 4 the overall win by one shot.
Result: Cranbourne 4 defeated Glen Waverley 3 by winning two rinks and losing two rinks.
Final score – Cranbourne 4 (85) defeated Glen Waverley 3 (84) + 1 shot and 14 points. Great effort by both clubs and another quality game.
Best rink was – Skip: Scott De Piazza, Derek Maguire, Monica Peers and Barry Graham (29 – 20).
Cranbourne 5 were supposed to travel and take on Upwey-Tecoma 4, but following a phone call, this side received a Forfeit victory.
Cranbourne 5 was awarded 16 points and 12 shots.
It was a great day for the club winning four out of five divisions and everybody should be very proud of their efforts.
