Tyler’s Tp 10: Bring it back!

If it’s not transparent by now, Gazette readers should know that Tyler is an ideas man.

Sports editor Dave Nagel is constantly bombarded with ideas, most of which are received with open arms – much like this segment itself.

But of course, some are met with disdain.

At the top of that particular list is Tyler’s relentless desire to bring back the sensationally famous Beer O’clock segment – that Dave created – and the Gazette formerly ran.

So out of pure nastiness towards the boss, here are the top 10 local football candidates Tyler would invite to do a Beer O’clock with if Dave revived the piece…

10. The Battle brothers – Nick and Josh: While they’d be extremely entertaining, this ranks at 10 because getting these two on the cold ones in winter would be tough, which would make Beer O’clock obsolete… perhaps it’s a cricket season job!

9. Frankie Martinez: Although many draftees forget their roots quicker than the time it takes for their name to be called on draft night, no player out of the Rays forgets Frankie. Adam Treloar would be a frequent topic, no one likes anyone more than Frankie likes Ads.

8. Rodney Benstead: Benstead’s coaching story is remarkable. Not only does he endure the rigours of coaching a senior side, but he also is steering the Berwick Springs under-12 side as well.

7. Matthew Boyd: Boydy played in an AFL premiership, before leading Doveton to an Outer East flag in 2019. He now is playing a significant role at the emerging Fremantle Dockers. He knows a thing or two about being an underdog.

6. Kerem Baskaya: 308 snags in 51 games across 2013-2015… Baskaya clearly knew where the poles were. He was the focal point in one of the greatest local footy sides ever and would have plenty of stories to tell.

5. Daniel Mislicki: “Hey Slick, tell me about that one time you kicked five snags from the guts to win a granny”, would be the main topic of conversation. Anyone with the means of telling a story like that sits high on this list.

4. Dylan Quirk: An everlasting performer in both cricket and footy in the local area. He kicked the sealer in the 2012 grand final – and celebrated accordingly – before kicking THAT point in 2013. Not to mention his noteworthy cricket heroics. Maybe Dave is right, because this particular Beer O’clock would need six pages.

3. Travis Tuck: Nagel often brags about how he did a Beer O’clock with Michael, so it’s only fair Travis sits high on this list. A dual-premiership player at the Wickers with a rich footy heritage.

2. The Cox’s – Nick and Mitch: Watching and listening these two argue about their careers would be worth all the beers they would set the company back. Mitch was reminded back in July 2019 that he didn’t have a flag or any league medals, but he has since won a flag and is on an AFL list. So, tell me boys, where does the debate sit now?

1. Mick Fogarty: A maiden mention for Mick in Tyler’s Top 10. Let’s be frank, it’s most likely the highlight of his decorated career! Where do we even start with Mick? He coaches successful teams for fun and has a perpetual passion for footy.
