Brazen daylight burglary at Berwick Jewellers, man taken to hospital

Berwick Jewellers on High street were the latest victim of a violent daylight burglary, after a score of masked men stormed the business.

Officers responded to reports of three masked males armed with hammers and bats entering the jewellery store about 12pm on Tuesday 17 February.

A video posted by the owner’s daughter and Berwick MP, Brad Battin, shows the men fitted with backpacks, two in high vis tops and one in a black hoodie.

The shop was manned by two shop assistants, one was the shop owner who ran towards the alleged assailants in attempt to deter the alleged thieves.

Police say the offenders assaulted the shop keeper and smashed glass cabinets before stealing jewellery.

The three males fled the scene in an awaiting black Toyota Kluger, driven by a fourth male.

Paramedics assessed and treated one patient at the scene.

The man, who is in his 50s was transported by road ambulance to hospital with upper body injuries in a stable condition.

Onlookers at the scene told Star News that the car double parked on the busy street before the men ran in where they heard commotion and yelling.

A crime scene has been established and the investigation remains ongoing.
