A new primary school has opened in Cranbourne North as part of a statewide school expansion, alongside increased financial support for families through the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.
Kala Primary School welcomed its first students this week, one of 19 new government schools opening across Victoria at the start of the school year.
The new schools are expected to provide more than 11,000 additional enrolment places.
Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas attended the opening of Kala Primary School on Thursday 29 January, saying the school would support families in one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing suburbs.
“This new school will provide a quality education and facilities for families in Cranbourne North,” he said.
“My thanks to the architects, designers, builders, tradies and department officials for working on this project. This new school is very much welcomed, thanks to the local community for their patience during the building process.”
The school opening coincides with an expansion of the Victorian Government’s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund, which helps eligible families cover the cost of school activities such as camps, excursions and sporting programs.
From this term, eligible students will receive $400 per year under the scheme, an increase from previous payments of $154 for primary students and $256 for secondary students. The fund supports more than 190,000 students annually and is available to eligible families at both government and non-government schools.
Education Minister Ben Carroll said the increased payments were aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures while ensuring students could participate in core school experiences.
