Clyde Road Upgrade starts 2026 strongly

Major road and freeway closures will impact motorists travelling through Cranbourne and Berwick later this month, as crews push ahead with critical works on the Clyde Road Upgrade.

The Princes Freeway will be closed in both directions at Clyde Road from 8pm on Friday 16 January to 5am on Monday 19 January, with the Clyde Road overpass also shut in both directions during this period.

The closures will allow crews to work around the clock on the Clyde Road bridge, where the overpass above the Princes Freeway is being widened to accommodate additional lanes.

Big Build Roads Program Director Brendan Pauwels said the project had reached several key milestones at the start of 2026.

“The project is flying ahead with several big milestones getting ticked off in early 2026,” he said.

The milestones included reopening Kangan Drive to left-in, left-out traffic, opening upgraded lanes, and preparing to lift the bridge beams into place to form the new lanes of the overpass.

“We’re switching traffic onto Clyde Road’s newly upgraded southbound lanes so we can start works to upgrade the northbound lanes and the Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard intersection,” Mr Pauwels said.

During the weekend closure, crews will carry out hydro-demolition on the city side of the Clyde Road overpass, using high-pressure water jets to break down the concrete around the edge of the overpass to expose the steel underneath.

Once completed, crews will connect the extra steel reinforcement needed to support the extra lanes we’re adding to the existing structure.

Further closures are scheduled from Monday 19 January to Wednesday 21 January, with Clyde Road closed between Bemersyde Drive and Enterprise Avenue from 8pm to 5am each night while barriers are relocated and safe work zones established.

From 19 January until mid-2026, there’ll be long-term traffic changes in place along Clyde Road and changes to the way motorists access Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard, Kangan Drive and the Clyde Road Overpass freeway ramps.
