Clyde North local Tom Tufuga has been recognised for his contribution to Casey Crusaders Rugby Club in a volunteer award.

The award celebrates ten community members across the nation as Australia’s unsung sporting heroes with $175,000 in grants to Australia’s top volunteers and their respective local clubs.

Tom’s club will receive $15,000 in grant funding to support with operations and management, and $2500 to appreciate Tom’s over and above individual dedication to his community.

Tom once stepped up for his club juniors, personally funding players unable to afford uniforms.

He said he was honoured not only to be nominated but then to be the recipient of the Cadbury Volunteer Value Award Grant.

“I accept this grant on behalf of our great Rugby Club and all the hardworking volunteers who put in so much work to ensure this club runs smoothly each season,” he said.

“The timing couldn’t be any better, winning Cadbury’s Grant.

“Our club is preparing to move to our newly renovated home grounds next year so the Grant will go towards new pad posts, signage, equipment, and uniforms.”

He said the club would not be able to run without volunteers who filled many critical roles, including as coaches, officials, managers, administrators, board, and committee members.

“Our volunteers willingly give of their time to help the club and without financial gain,” he said.

“We are fortunate and blessed to have such an amazing community of volunteers.”

Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) found almost two in three clubs were not having enough volunteers in the last 12 months.
