Charge over hit-run fatality

The driver of a recreational vehicle has been charged after a cyclist was killed in an apparent hit-run crash in Melbourne’s outer southeast.

The “Winnebago-type vehicle” struck the cyclist on Frankston-Dandenong Road at Bangholme on Friday morning before the driver fled, police said.

The cyclist was found dead on the side of the road before 6am by a passing driver who raised the alarm.

A 37-year-old man from Cranbourne East made himself known to police after they arrived at his home following a separate triple zero call from the address and was taken into custody.

Police later charged the man with numerous offences including dangerous driving causing death and failing to render assistance.

He has been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 22.
