There’s a new team of community-minded teenagers looking to make waves in the South East.
The Leo Club of Casey is a project established by the Cranbourne Lions Club earlier this year for ambitious teenagers who want to make a difference in their local and broader community.
“Lions club members decided they wanted to do this as a project,” Belinda Whelan said. ”They felt a need in the community for young people to get involved.
“The purpose of the clubs is to be service-minded people and assist community locally and globally if they can.
“They develop great skills like leadership, teamwork, organisation, all those things.”
While coming under the banner of Lions, the Leos act as a separate entity, with their own committee led by 15-year-old President Ciara Hunia.
“We’re a group of young and talented people who come together as a group to help people in need,” Ms Hunia said.
Ms Hunia’s Grandfather is a member of the Lions Club of Cranbourne and she had enjoyed helping with barbecues and fundraisers for them.
The committee have identified working with animal rescue centres and the elderly as some of their early projects to stick their claws into.
On Saturday 7 May the Leos will host a Mothers Day afternoon tea at the Cranbourne West Community Hub between 2.30 and 4pm, to present local mums with flowers and sit down for a bite to eat.
The Leos have extended an open invitation to the entire community, regardless of membership status.
Currently sitting at six members, the aim is to grow the group to 10 as soon as possible.
The Leo Club of Casey meet on the second and fourth Friday of every month at the Cranbourne West Community Hub from 5.30 to 7.30pm.
