In a major benefit for upcoming holiday makers, the Department of Transport have announced that eased road conditions will be in place along the Monash Freeway over the Easter break and Anzac Day period.
Speed limits will be set to 80km/hr along the freeway – while work sites between Cardinia Road and Springvale Road (inbound) and Warrigal Road and Cardinia Road (outbound) will be reduced and lanes will open to traffic where possible.
“Lanes will have temporary line markings in place over the break – so we encourage motorists to drive safely and to the conditions,” said Major Road Projects Victoria project director Catherine Gunn.
Some lanes are also being profiled in preparation for resurfacing works – resulting in a rougher road surface until new asphalt is laid.
Works – including resurfacing – will then get underway on site from Tuesday 26 April.
“We’re forging ahead with resurfacing works, which crews will complete after the Easter break to then focus on electronic sign gantry installation,” said Ms Gunn.
Electronic sign gantries, which alert drivers to lane closures and speed limit changes in real time, will be completed along with works to the side of the freeway before new lanes are opened.
The Department of Transport says new lanes on the Monash Freeway will improve safety, increase capacity and reduce travel times for the 470,000 motorists who use the freeway every day.
“An incredible amount of work will be undertaken on the Monash Freeway after the Easter break to help get motorists home safer and sooner,” said Minister for Transport Jacinta Allan.
The department says 36 kilometres of new freeway lanes will be open to traffic this year.
