Neighbourhood Watch encourages vigilance

Neighbourhood Watch Casey (NHW) is encouraging residents to remain vigilant despite a 17.2 per cent decrease in criminal incidents in the municipality from 2020 to 2021.

The Criminal Statistics Agency revealed their statistics in mid-March, with Casey’s decline consistent with the 12.8 per cent reduction across Victoria.

NHW said that crooks will always for an easy way to get in and out of the scene quickly so simple safety habits can increase a person’s safety.

Locking garages, doors and windows, hiding valuables, including garage remotes out of sight and keeping ‘home’ out of your GPS was among some of the advice that NWH gave to residents.

“Crimes of opportunity are the quick wins criminals will look for,” Damien Rosario, president of NHW said.

“Being vigilant by looking out for each other and securing your property can help deter crime if it becomes too difficult for the crims to attempt.”

NHW also encouraged people to keep their eyes out for criminality in their neighbourhood to help keep everyone safe.

“It comes down to watching out for each other,” Mr Rosario said.

“The more awareness we have of each other and our surroundings, the better our chances of identifying critical details of a crime or one that may be in progress, or preventing one by reporting suspicious activities to agencies such as Crime Stoppers.”
