Silverbeet grows out of control

Local green thumb Sofio Raiti was surprised to find his silverbeet has grown to reach 2.25 metres tall.

The Cranbourne resident said the vegetable has been growing for about six months and “just grew out of control”.

“I’ve never seen it this tall before,” he said.

“The leaves were very wide and big and the top is all seeds now.”

Sofio almost lost his silverbeet in recent stormy weather but was relieved to find it in tact.

He has been growing his own vegetables since about 1992 and his impressive garden features peppers, eggplant, lettuce, beans, and tomatoes.

Sofio will plant more silverbeet in autumn next year.
