Doctors at Our Medical Cranbourne are encouraging the community to come forward for their Covid-19 vaccination.
Members of the community may be hesitant to receive the vaccination and so Our Medical Cranbourne lead doctor Mark Overton is on hand to dispel some of the most common myths.
A common myth in the community is that more people have died from receiving the vaccination than Covid-19 itself.
But Dr Mark Overton explained that this is in fact, false.
“In Australia there have tragically been 965 Covid-19 related deaths since the start of the pandemic, and according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration, six deaths nationally associated with the vaccine,” he said.
“As with any vaccination, there are risks, and blood clotting is a known, rare side effect.
“Health professionals screen all patients prior to the vaccination to ensure that the patient’s medical history is considered and while TTS is rare, at Our Medical
Cranbourne we encourage patients to speak directly with their GP should they have any concerns.”
While the Covid-19 vaccinations may have side effects, most of the time, these are manageable at home.
“The most reported side effects are minor and usually last no longer than a couple of days,” Dr Overton said.
“The most commonly reported side effects are headache, fever, muscle pain, fatigue, chills and nausea.
“Most of these can be addressed with rest, and if necessary, household pain medication.”
Although a recent surge in vaccination rates has been reported nationally, Dr Overton explained that there is a way to go.
“We are experiencing a global pandemic like no other. The community can play their part by following the Victorian Government rules.
“Wear a mask when out in public, practise social distancing whenever possible, get tested and stay home if you have cold or flu-like symptoms, and if you are eligible, please step forward for your vaccination.
“Vaccination is our path to a more normal life for all Australians,” he said.
He acknowledged that the impact of the restrictions is challenging and urged anyone struggling emotionally or psychologically to speak to their GP.
Covid-19 vaccinations are being offered at Our Medical Cranbourne with an AstraZeneca walk-in clinic for patients 18 and over from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, starting Mon 23 August.
