There are lights, but currently no action on the new Evans Road bridge in Lyndhurst.
Since the bridge over the former level crossing opened in October 2020, the area has been serviced by a number of portable lights – despite there being permanent street lights in the vicinity.
It’s got the Lynbrook Residents Association questioning why the street lights have not been turned on.
“We’re surprised that six months on, portable lights are still being used,” said spokesperson Viv Paine.
“We’re quite surprised that it opened without street lighting.”
He said the portable hired lights that are currently servicing the bridge do not adequately illuminate the road.
“They leave a dark patch on top of the overpass, and it’s not good for traffic or pedestrians.
“On the Lynbrook side, the poles for the lights are so low that they’re shining in the eyes of drivers.
“I hate to think of the cost of having the lights there.”
Star News understands that the portable lights are only temporary, with permanent street lighting set to be turned on by the end of May.
Permanent street lighting undergoes a pre-commissioning process during major infrastructure projects, prior to being turned on.
It’s understood the cost of the lighting was included in the Evans Road Level Crossing Removal Project contract.
A spokesperson from the Level Crossing Removal Project said the bridge has “restored a vital road connection in the south east”.
