To celebrate the end of a tumultuous year, more than 100 students at Casey Grammar took to street art in an expression of creativity and joy.
On Tuesday 8 December, each faculty at the school lined up a fun end-of-year activity for students to choose from.
Art offered students the opportunity to draw a chalk picture of a character from Alice in Wonderland, allocated according to the colour of their school house: either the Caterpillar, Alice, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts.
Soon, the school carpark was adorned with bright colours as students unleashed their artistic talents.
Steve Kearney, head of art, said the activity was a good way to commemorate a year like no other.
A drone filmed the activity and students put together a time lapse from the footage, showing the drawings coming to life.
Thankfully, the weather held off long enough for the asphalt to dry out so the pictures would take.
“It encouraged house spirit and got them working as a team,” Mr Kearney said.
Members of the school’s management team including the principal and head of wellbeing judged the work, adding to the feeling of importance in the activity.
Julia, a student at the school, said the chalk drawings felt like a celebration.
“It was a great way to finish off the year,” she said.
“They had the radio on and it was just a cheerful environment. It’s been an up and down sort of year and this was a great way to finish it off.”
Daniel Isgro, head of science, said the science faculty whetted students’ appetites with a bridge building challenge and a liquid nitrogen demonstration that included magnetic levitation.
“This involved a rare earth metal suspended motionless above and a super-conductor immersed in liquid nitrogen,” he explained.
