It may be a time of lockdown, but Luke Sheppard has a good reason to smile.
The 10-year-old of Junction Village received the highest Cub Scout honour, the Grey Wolf Award.
Luke, who is at Devon Meadows Scout Group, said he was proud of his award, with his achievement being recognised recently at a virtual presentation, with a celebration being planned when restrictions allow.
“I’m glad I got to do my hike in the break between the lockdowns and I’m happy I achieved my Grey Wolf,” Luke said.
He said one of the best things about Cubs “is that we can all work together and meet new people”.
Sarah Dickenson, a Cub Scout Leader at Devon Meadows Scout Group, described Luke’s honour which he achieved before his 10th birthday, as “remarkable” and a “huge feat” given most Cubs do not earn the badge until finishing Cubs and moving up to Scouts at age 11.“The achievement is even more remarkable given the final parts of his badge were worked on during the first restrictions, but his enthusiasm and commitment saw him through the challenges posed during this time,” she said.
“The Grey Wolf has a number of elements requiring completion and many Cubs do not achieve this badge.”
She said Luke held a leadership position within the Cubs section as a Sixer, contributes to planning and running of Cub nights and is a fantastic role model to the younger Cubs.
Ms Dickenson said Scouting had continued through digital platforms during restrictions, which allowed young people to remain connected to Scouting and their friends.
“The usual face-to-face and physical activities of Scouting are being sorely missed by both Scouts of all sections and leaders alike.
“Devon Meadows Scout Group offers opportunities for boys and girls of all ages to grow and develop new skills with an emphasis on leadership and personal growth.”
Scout Group has Joeys (5-8 years), Cubs (8-11 years), Scouts (11-15 years) with a Venturer Unit (15 – 18 years) being planned for 2021. There is currently no cost to join Scouts Victoria until March 2021.
