The founder of Cranbourne-based charity Backpacks 4 Vic Kids has received an award for her service to the community.

Sally Beard was the recipient of the 2020 Australian Knight award by owners corporation management firm The Knight.

Each year, staff from the company vote on a person or charity whose efforts personify those of a knight and donate $10,000 to the winner.

Ms Beard said she was a bit shocked to hear the news.

“I had no idea at the time what this award would set in motion, but was absolutely delighted to hear that the award comes with such a generous donation,” she said.

As part of the award, The Knight designs and creates a card to send out to their clients to spread the word about the charity’s work – alerting more people to Backpacks 4 Vic Kids’ support for kids in care.

Already, Ms Beard said, recipients of the card have gotten in touch with her asking how they can help.

“It’s really quite overwhelming, it means so much to receive recognition,” Ms Beard said.

“Although this kind of accolade is really not necessary for me personally, it does make a world of difference in raising awareness of Backpacks 4 VIC Kids, the awful experience of displacement for children and our extremely important work.”

Staff from The Knight also visited Backpacks 4 Vic Kids’ headquarters to help complete some more of their ME Packs for kids.

“They came out to HQ bringing their bright smiles, laughter and efficient packing skills with them,” Ms Beard recalled.

“It was a delight to have them getting to know Backpacks 4 VIC Kids, and what we do, in a very personal and hands on way.”

“We always welcome small corporate teams at HQ. It’s a great team building exercise and a mental break from their daily tasks. It’s time together doing something really meaningful.”

Ms Beard added that Backpacks 4 Vic Kids is grateful for any support from the community, from donations to help complete ME Packs to sponsoring a ME Pack for a child.
