The Australian Sikh Games held over the Easter Long Weekend in Casey has delivered the largest attendance and participation in the 32-year history of the event.
Event management and Victoria Police estimated about 200,000 people attended over the three days from 19 to 21 April at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East.
The Games have become a staple sporting and cultural event for the Australian Sikh community which is held in every year in capital cities around Australia.
The event included traditional Indian and Australian sports along with cultural performances, music and dance, art displays learning seminars and traditional Indian food served as part of “langar” or community kitchen which is provided free to all attendees.
Narre Warren South MP Gary Mass said he was delighted to take part in the international event that hosted more than 4,000 athletes from Australia and overseas including New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and India.
Mr Mass was joined by Premier Daniel Andrews, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale.
“The Sikh Games provided our local community with a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate diversity through sport and to display our area’s ability to host major international events,” Mr Maas said.
The State Government contributed $200,000 to the event to support its celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.
