A man has been charged with making threats to kill after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant partner, and drove off with a baby before abandoning the car in Cranbourne West.

A high-speed police chase was sparked when the man took off in a Toyota Yaris from a Mentone address and towards a number of south eastern suburbs before it was terminated for safety reasons. The car was later found in Dean Court, Cranbourne West.

The man was arrested at a service station on Hume Highway near Donnybrook about 6pm by members of the Special Operations Group.

The baby was located and did not require any medical treatment.

The 25-year-old Wodonga man has been charged with numerous offences including making threats to kill, reckless conduct causing injury, theft of motor vehicle and reckless driving.

Police allege a woman was assaulted and a 10-month-old child was taken from a Mentone address this afternoon about midday.

He has been remanded to appear in Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 29 November.

Two other males were interviewed and have been released without charge.
