A Hampton Park man, who was working as a security guard outside a shopping centre in Melbourne’s CBD, has recovered after being injured in a terror attack.
The 24-year-old, who is an employee with SecureCorp, was harmed when a man brandishing a knife allegedly stabbed three people 4.10pm on Friday 9 November.
In a statement, SecureCorp said “The officer was hurt in the line of duty and has received medical care as well as support for himself and his family through our Employee Assistance Program.”
“He is recovering well and has requested that his personal details are not released and we respect his wishes.”
SecureCorp thanked the first responders to the incident and assistance provided to their officer.
SecureCorp declined to provide any footage, images or details that identified the employee, saying “Anonymity is an integral safety issue for our frontline staff.”
The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and released on Sunday 11 November.
The stabbing incident in the CBD left one person dead and is being treated as terror related.
Emergency services responded to reports of a car fire in Bourke Street about 4.10pm.
As police officers got out of their vehicle, they were confronted by a male who began a physical altercation with them, police say.
The man allegedly fled on foot and was chased by police; he then lunged at police with a knife.
“Police shot the 30-year-old and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition but he has since died,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
It’s understood the man was known to Victoria Police and federal intelligence authorities by way of his family associations.
The Bomb Response Unit attended and has deemed the burnt vehicle safe and a crime scene has been set up.
Counter Terrorism Command in conjunction with the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident but police do not perceive any ongoing threats at this stage.
There will be an increased police presence around the CBD and at major events in the coming days so the public can feel comfortable going about their business.
