$50K project windfall

A group of Sikh volunteers who run a Free Food Van has secured $50,081 through the State Government’s ‘Pick My Project’ community grants initiative.

Run by Sikh Volunteers Australia, the food van provides freshly cooked vegetarian food to the people facing tough times in the City of Casey two nights a week.

Spokesman Manpreet Singh said the group hoped to use the funding to build their own kitchen in Devon Meadows.

“As we are expanding our services, there is a great need to have our own kitchen. So far we are hiring a commercial kitchen to cook our food,” he said.

Mr Singh thanked the community for their generous support in voting for their project idea.

“Sikhism has a basic concept of free food for anyone without any discrimination.

“We have largest free kitchen of the world in Amritsar Punjab where 100 thousands people eat food every day,” Mr Singh added.

The food van was launched in March 2017 and currently visits Tooradin Caravan Park from 6pm-6:30pm and Frankston car park from 7pm-8pm every Wednesday and Saturday.

The grant was part of the Andrews Government’s ground-breaking program that gives locals the power to choose the projects their community needs.
