Man airlifted to hospital

A man in his 50s was airlifted to hospital after his car slammed into the back of a wood chipper truck in Cranbourne South on Wednesday the 29 August.

Police and ambulance were called to the crash on the Western Port Highway at 7.25am.

Police say the man was trapped in a Mazda 2 hatch where SES crews had to cut the roof off to free him.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man was extricated and transported by air ambulance helicopter to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

“The man had serious injuries to his legs and pelvis, and minor lacerations to his head and to his hands,” she said.

The driver of the truck, a man aged in his 30s, was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition after suffering an injury to his chest.

A Somerville Highway Patrol spokesman said the Mazda hatch had been “annihilated” after ramming into the back of the truck’s trailer without braking.

He said it’s believed the truck was turning left into a driveway where another car travelling behind the truck had overtaken it.

But police say the driver of the Mazda allegedly didn’t see the truck and ploughed into the back of it.

Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
