Casey Grammar’s senior school choir hit their biggest note during a performance at the Shrine of Remembrance.
The choir, which is comprised of 13 students from years 8-11, joined Lilydale High School Vocal Ensemble and the Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place Choir during the Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Service held on May 31.
“It was our first opportunity to sing in the community, and what an opportunity it was,” said Casey Grammar’s events coordinator Natasha Prentice.
The event paid tribute to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women to the defence of Australia.
Attendees were welcomed by Auntie Dot Peters, an Aboriginal Elder to the service.
Ms Prentice said students were presented with clapping sticks as a gift representing reconciliation.
“It really was an experience to remember, and an absolutely privilege to be a part of such a sacred service remembering the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait men and women who have served, and lost their lives representing our country, despite experiencing significant discrimination back home,” she said.
“We owe much to them for their sacrifice and service.”
Students also had the opportunity to sing with the RAAF Band, and met with former Sapphires and last year’s Senior Australian of the Year, Lois Peeler.
Worawa Aboriginal College choral group also sang ‘Ngarra Burra Ferra’ to the group.
