Staff and students of Casey Grammar School tucked into some delicious cupcakes as they hosted Cancer Council’s event – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea last week.
Now in its 25th year, the school raised more than $2,500 through the sale of cupcakes and sausage rolls on Thursday 24 May.
“In the past, only the staff had participated in the fundraising however this year we celebrated school wide getting the Social Justice Group involved,” said school spokeswoman Natasha Prentice.
Staff also held a morning tea with raffles and some excellent donated prizes also being auctioned.
The item that received the highest bid was a batch of Administration Officer Heather Hills’ homemade sausage rolls fetching $80, said Ms Prentice.
More than 500 cupcakes were sold. Year 12 student Social Justice Captain Shaylah Portelli’s mother Mrs Portelli made the cupcakes free of charge with the school paying for the costs of ingredients.
Head of Supporter Experience at Cancer Council Victoria, Bernadette Kennedy, said that while it might not seem like much, getting together to share a cup of tea can have a real and tangible effect on those in the community affected by cancer.
“Whatever your experience, cancer will affect one in three Victorians by the time we reach 75. We rely on the generosity of Victorians to continue our work in cancer research, prevention programs and support services,” she said.
