When 14-year-old Callyn walked out from swimming lessons at Casey Race last week he was devastated to find his bike missing – even though it was locked up.

The hybrid road bike, which was given to Callyn as a gift by his grandparents only a year ago so he could ride with his grandfather in the Great Victorian Bike Ride, was allegedly stolen at about 6pm on Monday 21 May.

Callyn’s mum Rhian Hughes said her son was heartbroken, and immediately posted a photo of the bike on social media in the hope to track down its whereabouts.

Within minutes, Ms Hughes received a message from a local couple offering to donate a second hand bike.

“She sent me a message and said ‘My husband’s got a bike in the shed he’s no longer using, your son’s welcome to it if he likes,” she said.

“Within half an hour of me putting up the post of Casey Crime Page, the bike was here. It was very quick.”

Ms Hughes said was taken aback by the couple’s generosity: “Bit emotional actually especially that Callyn was so upset that someone had taken his bike.

“It was in really nice condition, they were both lovely. It was really sweet of them.

“Callyn was quite speechless, he kept repeating thank you, thank you,” Ms Hughes said.
