Caught on camera

By Brendan Rees

Two callous thieves who took off with a trailer from a Cranbourne East driveway have been caught on camera during the early hours of Thursday morning on 19 April.

Footage captured from CCTV shows a car pull up near the victim’s home where two men get out and blatantly walk up the driveway on Kirwan Drive at 1.30am.

One of the men is seen carrying a pair of bolt cutters before cutting the lock and wheeling the trailer out.

The victim, Melinda Smith is still trying to wrap her head around why someone would commit such an act.

“They drove past the house slowly and then five minutes later they came back,” she said.

“There was also a spotter car down the road.

“My nephew and my son ran out because they heard it as it was going down the driveway.

“Normally I have my car parked there which blocks it as well as it’s got a lock on it in but we just got back from being away.”

It took only three minutes for the culprits to hook up the trailer and drive off, she said.

Ms Smith has taken to social media, appealing for anyone with information and to alert others on Facebook’s Casey Crime Page.

“We’ve had to put locks on all the doors. There’s that much crime in the area it’s not funny,” she said.

“Obviously they’ve been casing the place. The trailer hadn’t been there for five days. It just leaves you uneasy.”

Ms Smith said her 16-year-old son and elderly mother, who she cares for at her home, were shaken up. “It’s absolutely terrible,” she said.

The trailer, worth $3000, was a silver single-axle with registration 1IX1IC.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
