Students at Alkira Secondary College came together at their annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony on Friday 26 May.
The ceremony is held to honour the memory of the six million Jews and other victims who perished during the Holocaust.
As explained by Josh Frydenberg in 2012 “preserving the memories of all those who perished grows more important and urgent” as survivors are passing and the memories they imparted fading.”
The students and teachers at Alkira Secondary College are determined to ensure that the great loss of these men, women and children is never forgotten.
Year 10 student Kate vowed “not to let our people to be murdered again” and promised to fight for the rights of the human race.
Guest speakers included Les Kausman from Courage to Care and survivor Professor Henry Ekert as well as City of Casey Councillor Rosalie Crestani and David Southwick MP.
Students and teachers from both Alkira Secondary College and Mount Scopus Memorial College were reminded of the effects of prejudice, and encouraged to heed this warning from the past.
“Every single one of those six million people had the right to live, but they never got the opportunity to do so,” Year 10 student Alysha said.
