FOUR Casey businesses have been fined this financial year for selling tobacco to minors.
Casey inspectors have conducted 172 test purchases at businesses that sell cigarettes, which resulted in four businesses being fined $400 each for failing to comply with the Victorian Tobacco Act.
City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said council was committed to preventing the illegal sale of tobacco to people under the age of 18.
“Council plays a primary role in the enforcement of the Victorian Tobacco Act in Casey, and undertakes a number of initiatives to help ensure compliance by retailers that they are not selling cigarettes to minors and to prevent tobacco-related illness across the community.
“Council conducts a tobacco test purchasing program each year in addition to regular visits and inspections of tobacco retailers, licensed premises and other venues across Casey to ensure compliance with the Act.
Cr Aziz said while breaches were disappointing, council was pleased that the figure showed a significant decrease from previous years, with 20 businesses fined in 2011 from the 96 premises tested.
“Council will continue to educate tobacco retailers throughout Casey, so they are aware of their obligations in regards to the sale of tobacco products.
“Smoking causes more deaths in Victoria each year than road accidents, alcohol and drugs combined, so council will do what it can to implement the strict measures necessary to shield Casey’s minors.”
