Cycling precinct on track

By JARROD MCALEESE

CONSTRUCTION has commenced at the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct on a $2.87 million project that includes a new BMX track, car park, pavilion and track lighting in an initiative that will provide upgraded facilities for the racing community.
Joined by City of Casey Deputy Mayor Mick Morland, Balla Balla Ward Cr Geoff Ablett and Mayfield Ward Cr Amanda Stapledon, State Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera turned the first sod on 6 May to mark the beginning of the building process, made possible due to a $1.37 million Labor Government contribution.
Mr Perera said that the project will make the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct a hub for local racing enthusiasts.
“We’re getting it done for cyclists and BMX fans all over Casey. This upgrade will provide a fabulous home for budding riders to do what they love,” Mr Perera said.
With the popularity of BMX booming in the City of Casey, City of Casey Mayor Aziz said he was delighted to provide residents with ground-breaking, event-grade facilities to match the sport’s interest.
“Figures show that Casey is home to a large number of registered BMX riders and that is only going to continue to grow, so there is both an immediate and future demand for a BMX racing facility within the municipality.
“The new track will be the first BMX racing facility in the City of Casey, providing infrastructure that will enable state and national competitions,” Cr Aziz said.
