THEY came to watch one man on Good Friday.
Fans came in droves to watch former AFL footballer Brendan Fevola don the red and black, as he added the Frankston Bombers to his list of one-off clubs.
Sporting a stream-lined rig, harkening back to his playing days at Carlton and Dandenong Stingrays, Fevola, 35, originally from Narre Warren, looked lean and ready to boot a bag.
The recent winner of “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!” looked much more mobile after his stint in the African wilderness, but didn’t stray far from full forward though as Panthers’ defender Adam A’vard stood guard.
He finished the afternoon with six majors as the Bombers took a 16.13 (109) victory over Pearcedale 5.13 (43).
He wasn’t the only celebrity in the Frankston camp though as former Hawthorn premiership star Dermott Brereton donned the fluoro colours as the Bombers’ runner for the Good Friday clash.Opening the 2016 Nepean Football League season with a bang, the Bombers flew out of the blocks to boot seven goals in a lop-sided opening term.
Pearcedale struggled to match pace with Frankston through the opening term as big number 25 proved more of a decoy lead than a prominent one.
The Bombers strolled in the goal and booted it over the dual-Coleman Medalist’s head through a lopsided opening term. But Fevola found his rhythm to snag one late in the term before filling his boots to cap off his Nepean outing.Pearcedale was well serviced by ruckman Luke Murray and on-ballers Mitchell Smith and Mitch Williams on a tough day at the office to kick off the season.
The visitors booted their way back into the clash through the second term – kicking three goals with the wind to bring the margin back to 31 by the main break.
The Bombers made good use of the wind in the third term – extending the lead back out to 50 as Fevola found his stride once again and held on to boot away for a 66-point triumph.
Pearcedale will host Crib Point for round two while Devon Meadows kicks off its season against Rye away on Saturday.
