Mummy’s big boy

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

IT’S not often that hospital staff have to call on the handy man to put a newborn baby to sleep but when Blake Rose came along 10 years ago, nurses at Monash Women’s Casey Hospital had no other choice.
He was the biggest baby the 11 month old hospital had delivered at more than five kilograms.
And the door on the humidicrib had to be taken off to fit baby Blake inside, who was experiencing breathing difficulties.
A decade on proud Cranbourne mum Carolyn Rose recalls the exciting day.
“He had no clothes or nappies to fit him,” she said.
“He was in three month old clothing straight away!”
Ms Rose said her new bub was the talk of the hospital.
“I had the cleaners and, of course, the handy man.
“I had everyone going into the nursery to take a look at him,” she said.
“When I bathed him his toes and head would stick out of the water on each end in the basin.”
Now in grade five with a big sister and little brother, Blake is an average height for his age but is expected to grow more than six foot.
And since Blake the Monash Women’s Casey Hospital has delivered an even bigger baby.
In November of 2008 a bub topped the scales at just over six kilograms and now holds the hospital record.
