Council lights the night without costing the Earth

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

THIS Christmas the City of Casey will be lit up by more than 9000 environmentally sustainable street lights.
The Casey Council invested $3.1 million and received $1.3 million from the Australian Government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut street lighting costs throughout the municipality.
Sixteen suburbs across Casey were included in the replacement works which began in November last year and changed mercury vapour lights to energy efficient LED lights.
Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the project had been completed nine months ahead of schedule.
“It’s great news for residents as it ensures the sustainability and financial benefits will begin to be realised earlier than anticipated”, Cr Aziz said.
The council plans to continue the replacement works next year with $1.55 million put aside from the five year capital works program for the project.
