WITH a blessing from Father Matt Harry – and a new and improved boat shed – the Warneet Motor Yacht Club turned up their sails for their first cruise of the season.
As well as signing up new members as part of the club’s open day on Sunday 11 October, Commodore Michael O’Brien said the club was ecstatic they had their work room back, after the shed was almost blown away last year.
“We are very happy with the new shed, we didn’t want to have to go without a shed and work room for up keep of the boats for another year,” Mr O’Brien said.
Commodore of the club at the time Brian Shaw said the high-speed winds in October last year blew the shed “to bits”.
“There were boats all over the place all wrecked and the roof flew off into the car park,” he said.
After 12 months of construction the boat shed, which cost more than $200,000, was officially opened by Mr Shaw and the entire club was blessed.
“Every year we get our fleet and all the members blessed,” Mr O’Brien said.
“This year, Father Matt Harry from Uniting Place in Hampton Park said a prayer to keep us all safe for the season.”
About 60 yachtsmen and women turned up for the day and Mr O’Brien said the club was growing with around three new members signing up each month.
