BRODIE Farrer’s ability to light up a room has seen her win Volunteer of the Year.
The 20-year-old volunteers at Lifeview Willow Wood in Cranbourne and won the Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) Victoria Volunteer of the Year Award.
The award was handed down at the Awards for Excellence cocktail function, by LASA Victoria president Ingrid William.
It recognised Brodie’s work in volunteering with local aged care provider Lifeview Residential Care.
Specifically, the award highlights Brodie’s dedication, and generosity of time, in enhancing the health outcomes and well-being of residents at Lifeview Willow Wood.
“I am absolutely overwhelmed, delighted and honoured to have been recognised by LASA Victoria for my volunteering work,” Brodie said.
“I really didn’t expect to be nominated for this award, let alone be a finalist and then the overall winner.
“When I walk through the doors of Willow Wood, I feel like I’m coming home. I’m able to be myself and bring a smile to residents’ faces, which brings me satisfaction.”
At the age of four Brodie was diagnosed with dystonic cerebral palsy, and takes 670 tablets a month to just be able to walk and talk.
This diagnosis doesn’t stop her from volunteering though, as she volunteers two to three days a week and would be there every day if she could.
She runs a carpet bowls group for the residents and when they compliment her on how well she does, you can see the pride in her face.
The benefit to Brodie from volunteering has also been enormous and has assisted with her communication, maturity and confidence.
Brodie also works two days a week for a private company packing food parcels.
