The numbers didn’t have it

By JARROD POTTER

VWFL – DIVISION 1 AND 3
DOWN in the trenches, Endeavour Hills had to toil to knock over Kew.
While the score line suggests a down in the dirt slog, conditions could not have been more perfect – as a sunny winter’s day stood in contrast to the struggle in the packs.
The in-and-under types excelled for the Falcons as Maria Pickering, Ashlee Ladson and Georgia Punton all put their bodies on the line to take the pill in the 26-point victory.
Jess Wallace excelled in her return to the line-up to add yet another string to the Falcons’ bow and another fan favourite Wallace – Sarah – is set to return in the next couple of weeks.
Coach Mark Haughton praised the efforts of the Falcons’ never-give-in attitude, especially when injuries started to set in.
“Was a pretty rugged game against Kew,” Haughton said.
“They really poured on the numbers around the ball and our forward line.
“We got there though, massive effort really as tackling was hard from both sides.”
With ruck mainstay Ash Seymour going down injured, it opened the door for the next Falcon to soar at the centre bounce with Haughton ecstatic by the efforts of step-in tall Sarah Bodycomb.
“Ash Seymour went down with an ankle… will be out for at least a week, and Sarah Bodycomb was the replacement,” Haughton said.
“She smashed it to bits, needless to say we left her there for the rest of the game as she took some contested marks, was great at the hard ball on the ground and smashed the ruck contest.”
Cruising atop the ladder with 11 wins in a row and 700.79 per cent, the high-flying Falcons head out to Deer Park for their next ladder-defining contest on Sunday from 12pm.
Cranbourne had no trouble brushing aside a lacklustre Darebin in Division 1, taking a whopping 136-point triumph on their road trip. Kirsten Mcleod, Bianca Jakobsson (5 goals each) and Hayley Wildes (4) all lined up to join the fun as Cranbourne recorded its eighth win on the trot. With the win Cranbourne reclaimed top spot on the ladder and faces St Kilda at home on Sunday.
Cranbourne’s seconds knocked over Bayswater by 34 points and Endeavour Hills’ seconds had a bye after Montmorency forfeited.
