Eagles’ crushing win

By JARROD POTTER

VWFL – DIVISION 1 AND 3
CRANBOURNE and Endeavour Hills continued their high-flying seasons with the Eagles snaring a whopping 149-point win over Diamond Creek, while the Falcons had to work a bit harder to undo Seaford in a 33-point victory.
Led by Kirsten Mcleod (six goals) and Hayley Wildes (three goals) Cranbourne booted 22.18 (150) to a solitary behind from the home side as the forwards left no question about which side was on top.
Jessica Daoud also featured in the best with Brianna Phelps and Cat Robinson.
Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said the Creekers’ numbers and experience didn’t give them any favours – even after he started rotating the Eagles’ roster.
“I think they’re struggling for numbers and you could see they seemed pretty inexperienced,” Smith said.
“They battled on pretty well – their full back was good – but we were a class above.
“I threw it around heaps – had the back line playing in the forward line, forwards through the midfield – it was a good opportunity to give the girls a rest – especially with a big game against Knox on the weekend.”
Smith praised the efforts of his hard-nut midfield leader Tess McEvoy, and he believes her recent form ranks among the top of the VWFL’s finest.
“Tess McEvoy – her last month of footy has been as good as anyone’s,” Smith said. “She’s been our best consistently – just perfect.”
The coach also thought the other usual suspects – Mcleod, Wildes, Hardiman and Cullis – stood out alongside Jess Daoud and Alicia Johnson.
Cranbourne will be on the big stage on Saturday morning, with the Eagles battling Knox as a VFL curtain-raiser at 11.25am before the Casey Scorpions.
In Division 3, Endeavour Hills burst open the match in the second and third term to maintain its perfect record in VWFL life.
The Falcons booted away via Siona Pilkington while Sarah Beattie, Jess Xerri and Catherine Rogers all featured in the best.
Endeavour Hills’ heads to Peanut Farm Reserve to face St Kilda Sharks on Sunday.
