MOST freckles are benign – simply the effects of many years of sun exposure.
However, a small minority are thin, slow growing melanomas – so called ‘lentigo maligna’.
Beware of any freckle that is slowly growing or darkening over the years. Sometimes comparisons with older photographs on a phone digital camera can tell if a lesion is enlarging.
If in doubt, consult a doctor.
Slow growing though they are, lentigo maligna will eventually become invasive and become as dangerous as any other melanoma.
