New charges for terror accused teen

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

A HAMPTON Park man who had been placed in preventative detention since Saturday’s counter-terrorism raids has been released, re-arrested and charged by police overnight.
The 18-year-old will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today, charged with the federal offence of conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.
He had been placed in custody without charge for three days under a preventative detention order – the first time such an order had been enforced in Victoria.
Others charged following the Operation Rising raids are Sevdet Ramdan Besim, of Hallam, accused of the same conspiracy offence, and an 18-year-old Narre Warren man released on summons on prohibited weapons charges.
Besim is scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, have been released from custody.
The joint state and federal police’s counter-terrorism team executed seven search warrants in Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring as part of the operation on Saturday morning.
