TWO sisters from Casey Grammar School have tapped their way to the top and will be performing amongst the highest achieving dance students from 2014.
The VCE ‘Top Class Dance’ concert presents a range of dance styles from VCE and VET dance students from across Victoria. Drama Coordinator at Casey Grammar School, Natalie Burns said both sisters, Brielle and Tiarna Shiels received an A+ in their examination, giving them the opportunity to audition for Top Class.
“Both girls will be performing solo tap routines, an outstanding achievement given that it is often an under represented dance style,” Ms Burns said.
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority put together a season of excellence performance each year, where younger students can get a peep past the curtain and an insight into VCE dance.
“The girls studied dance off campus by distance education and only a select few from across the state are invited to audition and even fewer are picked for the concert,” Ms Burns said.
17-year-old, Brielle Shiels said she is a little nervous and excited at the same time for the performance.
“It will be such a great experience to perform in front of a large audience and dance in such a beautiful venue,” Brielle said.
The sisters have both been dancing since kindergarten and 19-year-old Tiarna Shiels can still remember watching the Top Class Dance concert as a younger student.
“I felt really inspired, I had always hoped to get an invitation to audition but it still came as a complete surprise,” Tiarna said.
The dancing duo will take centre stage on Thursday 19 February at the Melbourne Recital Centre at 10.30am and 2pm.
“VET Dance was definitely my favourite subject in Year 12.
“I found it doubled as both an academic subject and as an outlet… I feel really privileged to have been chosen,” Tiarna said.
