Balance of opinion

To John Glazebrook, I think we have all had our fill of your letters regarding Anzac commemorations (Anzac Balance, News Opinion, 18 September).
What you claim about lives that could have been saved by the efforts of the peace movement and the anti-conscription campaign may or may not be accurate.
Whilst I can respect the feelings of a genuine conscientious objector, I make two points.
Firstly, it is as true today as it was 100 years ago, and again some 70 years ago, that mankind is sometimes called upon to stand up to tyranny and brutality and it’s quite useless to have party A against war and defence if party B is determined to crush them.
Secondly, and most importantly, many people did go to war for what they felt was a righteous cause.
Some died, some were left physically or mentally scarred.
It seems to me that it is absolutely right and correct that those of us living in a free society today should take the time to remember them.
B Hopkins,
Cranbourne North.
